OMA has some indirect network benefits because higher passenger volumes make airport locations more attractive to retailers, food operators, parking services, cargo handlers, and hotel partners. That can lift non-aeronautical revenue and make the airport experience more complete. However, this is not a classic network effect in which each new user meaningfully increases value for all others across the platform. Each airport largely serves its own catchment area, and airlines or merchants can multi-home across competing locations with limited loss. The ecosystem is helpful, but it is mostly a commercialization layer on top of regulated airport traffic rather than a powerful self-reinforcing network.

Airlines face real but not prohibitive switching costs at OMA airports. Moving a route requires reworking schedules, ground handling, maintenance, marketing, and potentially negotiating for alternative airport slots and infrastructure. At a hub like Monterrey, established passenger demand and airport-specific operating capabilities make relocation inconvenient and risky. Still, airlines can and do adjust capacity across airports when economics change, so this is not deep lock-in. Passengers also select airports mainly based on route availability and price, which limits customer captivity. The result is moderate switching friction that supports margins, but not enough to create a near-permanent lock on airline demand.

OMA’s strongest intangible asset is not brand, patents, or proprietary technology; it is the set of long-dated airport concessions granted by the Mexican government. Those rights create exclusive operating positions in attractive regional markets and underpin pricing power in aeronautical and commercial fees. The airports themselves are also hard to replicate because the regulatory, environmental, and permitting burden is substantial. That said, the advantage is contractual rather than absolute: concession terms are finite, oversight is real, and renewal or modification risk always exists. Brand helps at the margin, but the moat comes primarily from legal and regulatory exclusivity, which is substantial but not invincible.

OMA has a moderate cost advantage from operating a multi-airport portfolio and leveraging the VINCI Airports network for procurement, standardized systems, and operating know-how. Shared technology platforms, centralized processes, and better supplier terms should lower per-passenger processing costs versus smaller standalone operators. Even so, airport economics are heavily shaped by regulation, safety standards, and capital intensity, which constrain how much cost leadership can differentiate the business. Larger peers also enjoy scale, so OMA’s advantage is meaningful but not overwhelming. The company appears better positioned than small regional operators, yet the gap is more about efficiency and execution than a structurally unbeatable cost base.

This is OMA’s most durable pillar. Mexico’s airport market is concentrated in a small number of concession groups, and new entry is exceptionally difficult because of government concessions, massive infrastructure needs, and regulatory approval hurdles. That creates efficient-scale characteristics: only a few operators can viably serve the market, and duplicative airport infrastructure would be economically wasteful. OMA’s 13-airport footprint gives it a meaningful position within this structure, especially in northern and central Mexico. While the market is not a pure monopoly, the oligopolistic framework strongly limits the threat of new entrants. This pillar should remain intact for many years unless concession policy changes materially.
