The S&P 500 closed at a record 7,737 on August 4, 2026 — its first new high in two months — with the Dow above 54,000 for the first time and Amazon crossing $3 trillion in market value. Underneath the celebration sits a number that deserves more scrutiny. The four largest technology spenders have now guided to roughly $700 billion of combined capital expenditure for 2026, most of it on AI data centers, servers, and GPUs.
For a moat investor it poses one question: is this spending digging moats, or is it just the entry fee for staying in the game? The two look identical on a cash flow statement. They have opposite consequences for long-term returns.
The bill, itemized
Every figure below was raised during the July 2026 earnings round — none of these companies is spending what it planned to in January:
- Amazon (AMZN) lifted its 2026 capex guidance from $200 billion to $220 billion, citing higher memory-chip prices.
- Alphabet (GOOGL) raised its full-year range to $195–205 billion, up from $180–190 billion.
- Meta (META) moved its range to $135–145 billion, raising the low end $10 billion in one quarter. Quarterly free cash flow came in at $784 million — on $60.8 billion of revenue.
- Microsoft (MSFT) closed its June fiscal year having actually spent about $116 billion, and CFO Amy Hood told analysts capital spending will grow again in fiscal 2027.
Analyst tallies put the combined 2026 figure around $700 billion — some as high as $725 billion — against roughly $410 billion in 2025. That is a 70–80% increase in one year, more than any country except the United States spends on national defense. Estimates for 2027 already reach toward $1 trillion.
What capital-cycle history says
The reason to be uneasy is not the size of the number. It is the shape of the pattern.
High returns attract capital. Capital builds capacity. Capacity competes returns back down — usually below the cost of the capital that built it. The pattern is regular enough that the "capital cycle" school of investing (best documented in Capital Returns) treats supply-side expansion, not demand, as the most reliable predictor of an industry's future returns. It is the same mean reversion that makes economic moats valuable in the first place: a moat is whatever interrupts the pattern.
Infrastructure arms races have a particularly grim record. Britain's 1840s railway mania built lines that transformed the economy and never earned back their capital. The late-1990s telecom boom is the closer rhyme: carriers laid fiber on the belief that internet traffic was doubling every hundred days (it was doubling roughly annually), most of that fiber sat dark for years, and the biggest builders — WorldCom, Global Crossing — went bankrupt by 2002. The technology was transformative and the builders lost nearly everything, both at once. The value migrated to the companies that rented the resulting cheap bandwidth — the application layer that grew into the giants doing today's spending.
The moat test the spending has to pass
Capex builds a moat under one condition: it ends as an asset rivals cannot replicate, or rationally will not. A railroad through a valley that supports one railroad is a moat. Four companies building the same asset simultaneously, each because the others are, is not a moat — it is an entry fee, paid annually.
That is the efficient scale reading of this cycle: a four-way race to $700 billion is close to the definition of a market whose economics do not deter entry. Amazon is guiding to $220 billion precisely because standing still is not available, and the same is true of the other three.
The bull case lives at the end state. If demand holds, the survivors could exit this decade with the largest, cheapest compute fleets ever assembled — custom silicon, gigawatt-scale power contracts, utilization economics no entrant could match. That would be a genuine, durable cost advantage. But it is a bet on how the race ends, not a structural fact that exists today.
MoatScan's own framework is quietly instructive here. As of the analyses dated between June 26 and August 1, 2026, Alphabet reads 80/100 Wide, Meta 78/100 Wide, Microsoft 77/100 Wide, and Amazon 75/100 Narrow. Look at which pillars carry those ratings — Alphabet's and Meta's network effects, Microsoft's enterprise switching costs, Amazon's contracted workloads — and note that every one predates the AI buildout. None of these companies is rated Wide because of its data centers. The fleet defends the moat; it is not the moat.
The market is already grading each dollar
Within eight days in late July, the market handed down four verdicts on nearly identical news:
- Microsoft raised spending and rallied ~9% — because Azure accelerated to 43% growth and crossed $100 billion in annual revenue (full breakdown).
- Amazon raised spending and rallied ~15% — because AWS reaccelerated and its contracted backlog hit $496 billion (full breakdown).
- Alphabet beat on revenue, grew Cloud 82%, raised spending — and fell ~4%.
- Meta edged past revenue estimates, raised spending — and fell ~8%.
The rubric is consistent: capex arriving alongside contracted revenue reads as investment; capex arriving on faith reads as risk. Meta is structurally different — it rents no capacity to customers, so its spending must be repaid entirely by its own advertising and AI products, with no backlog to point at.
That rubric is also the honest difference between 2026 and 1999. The fiber overbuild was debt-financed speculation against imaginary demand; this cycle is funded largely from the operating cash flow of profitable oligopolies, against hundreds of billions in signed commitments. Two caveats keep the comparison alive. Off-balance-sheet financing is appearing at the margins, with data centers funded through private-credit joint ventures. And GPUs are not fiber: they depreciate in roughly five to six years, so any glut self-corrects faster — but the spending also never "finishes." This is a treadmill, not a bridge.
What it does to fair value
Capex comes straight out of free cash flow, and DCF models — including ours — respond by assuming the intensity fades in the out-years. All four companies currently read Undervalued on MoatScan's DCFs: Microsoft at a $559.62 fair value (July 31 analysis), Amazon $362.39 (August 1), Alphabet $401.52 (July 29), Meta $843.93 (July 29). Each of those models expects capex-to-revenue to fall back; our Amazon piece flagged the gap explicitly — 13.2% modelled against roughly 27% in the June quarter. If the race runs longer than the models assume, the fair values come down, and the depreciation from today's servers lands on future income statements regardless. The undervalued screen is a starting point, not a verdict.
How a moat investor holds this
Three sortings do most of the work. First, separate the arms dealers from the combatants — NVIDIA (NVDA) gets paid whichever spender wins. Second, watch ROIC, not revenue growth: the first sign a capital cycle is destroying value is returns on capital sliding while revenue still accelerates, and depreciation is how it will show up here. Third, keep the fiber precedent in mind: if this does end in overbuild, the winners will be whoever rents the resulting cheap compute — the same two-sided dynamic AI applies to every moat.
The uncomfortable truth about capital cycles is that each participant's spending is individually rational and collectively ruinous — that is what makes them cycles. Nothing in the record highs of early August settles which kind this is. The moat question is the right one to keep asking precisely because growth, however spectacular, cannot answer it.
